Probably when you have a complex mask to do just use few mask points, then when you see that the mask is changing shape and becoming smaller, cut the clip and start with a new mask. Right-click in the Timeline area. Choose Set Sequence Marker > In and Out Around Clip. The Timeline is now shaded above the second clip.
